Personal Statement on the Cottage Grove Community Library Project

For the past five years, I have led the library project, working tirelessly with so many Cottage Grove residents to gather ideas, address challenges, and refocus our efforts. Together, we’ve analyzed six different library scenarios, developed a formal Library Board strategic plan, crafted a comprehensive master plan, launched successful library programming for all ages, and installed a permanent StoryWalk®. These initiatives have already brought immeasurable benefits to our residents, local organizations, and businesses.

Recently, following a thorough five-month due diligence process, the Village Board voted to allow you, the community, to decide whether to move forward with building a public library. This decision was not made lightly. A brick-and-mortar library has been a top priority of the Village Board since 2021. Years of long-term planning, guided by Village financial consultants, architects, and library experts have ensured that the project, as defined today, is financially sound and justifable. It will not jeopardize the Village’s finances, lower the bond rating, or hinder any other critical projects from moving forward. It will bring a full service library to Cottage Grove.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime, legacy opportunity to establish a centrally located library in Cottage Grove. I understand the concerns about potential tax impacts, as I too am a homeowner, which is why the overarching library plan includes selling the current land, launching a capital campaign to raise $1 million, and leveraging offset funds from Dane County taxes, multiple state grants, and other library revenues. These measures make this project a smart and sustainable investment in our community’s future.

A library represents far more than just a building—it is a transformative space, supported by helpful librarians, that will become a hub for learning, connection, and growth. It will open the world of literacy to residents of all ages, increase knowledge, and provide invaluable educational opportunities for our community. Recognizing what our community currently lacks and the incredible possibilities and potential this project offers, now is the time to move forward and make it a reality. Ultimately, the decision rests where it truly belongs—in the hands of the voters on April 1, 2025.
